Some creative projects begin with a mood board.
This one began with a conversation.
Months before cameras started clicking at the beautiful Grosse Pointe War Memorial, a few of us began dreamed about creating something that felt timeless. We wanted to step away from fleeting wedding trends and instead design an editorial inspired by classic Hollywood elegance, the kind of bridal fashion that still feels breathtaking decades later.
The result? An Audrey Hepburn-inspired bridal editorial that celebrated artistry, collaboration, and the incredible creativity of Detroit’s wedding industry.
They’re certainly beautiful—but they’re also an opportunity for wedding professionals to experiment, push creative boundaries, collaborate with talented artists, and showcase what’s possible for future couples.
Every detail of this editorial was intentionally designed, from the venue and florals to the couture fashion and bridal accessories. The goal wasn’t simply to create pretty photos—it was to tell the story of an elegant wedding day from beginning to end.
Audrey Hepburn has long been known for effortless sophistication.
That timeless inspiration became the foundation for the entire bridal look- from hair, to makeup, and for us, the wardrobe. The bridal wardrobe wasn’t just one gown. It was one couture design transformed into three completely different bridal looks.

The ceremony look featured an elegant satin skirt paired over the intricately detailed lace bodice dress, and topped with the lace bridal cape- creating a silhouette that felt both regal and timeless.
One of Sarah’s favorite couture details? Every piece of illusion mesh, zipper, and built-in support was custom color-matched to the model’s own skin tone—not simply a standard “bridal nude.” A huge plus that is available for the couture bride! Everything is custom. The completed look featured an incredible custom brooch designed by the one and only Mary Frances Maker (follow her here!)

For portraits and editorial moments, the couture ensemble evolved once again, creating a fresh silhouette while maintaining the same timeless sophistication that inspired the entire collection.

As the celebration continued, the gown transformed. The overskirt was removed, revealing a playful lace mini dress underneath—perfect for dancing, champagne toasts, and an unforgettable reception entrance.
Convertible gowns continue to grow in popularity because brides love getting multiple looks without purchasing multiple dresses. Again, if you go the couture route, we can do this for you!! Learn more here!
ALSO of course Sarah Kolis Couture brides need a custom PURSE made of the same fabric to match!? (Get yours here!)

The editorial also featured a custom short two-layer veil embroidered with an Audrey Hepburn quote. While this veil honored the inspiration behind the shoot, brides often personalize theirs with:
It’s one of those meaningful details guests may never notice—but you’ll treasure forever. Want your veil embroidered? Mention it at your fitting! Not one of Sarah’s alterations clients? No problem, mail yours into us! Learn more here!

While Sarah designed the couture fashion, this editorial came to life because of an incredible team of talented creatives who each brought their own expertise to the vision. Every flower, hairstyle, photograph, backdrop, beautifully styled table… Every thoughtful detail existed because dozens of creative minds worked together toward one shared goal.
When incredible vendors collaborate, everyone creates something bigger than they could alone!
While wedding trends will continue to change, elegance never goes out of style. Whether it’s a custom convertible gown, heirloom-inspired accessories, personalized embroidery, or couture details designed specifically for one bride, Sarah believes the most beautiful weddings are the ones that feel authentically personal.
This editorial was created to inspire brides to dream a little bigger—and to remind them that couture means there are no limits to what can be created.

First, this video went CRAZY online! How fun! (see here!)To me, it was a super simple video, a slow look at helping Shadi get dressed, from one bridal look element to another. The bonus was having Shadi spontaneously singing “Rock with me tonight” by Freddie Jackson. On top of everything, wow that girl has a voice! This video single-handedly broke my theory that you have to have haters for anything to go viral-not this time! Many comments stated how “beautiful”, “pretty”, “classy”, and “stunning” both Shadi and the dress were. My personal favorite comment: “Ma’am leave some stunning for the rest of us.” May all women cheer each other on like this!!! Ladies thank you!!!

In the days following, more viral videos showcased different aspects of this dress. One video showed my removing the overskirt for the “reception” look, revealing that adorable lace under-dress. Another showed how everyone loved this “3-piece” bridal look, but I explained that it was actually a “5-piece” look that included a veil and matching handbag. A favorite comment from that video: “I’ve come across different versions of this content the past few days. I sent my daughter a clip because the dress is astounding! The skirt …jaw drop. And the bride is absolutely gorgeous!!🔥”
Another video showed content of ME going about the day. Another showed how I constructed the gown back in my studio with some fun clips of Shadi doing a fitting- that queen has so much personality! Another video also showed the construction…with an emphasis on how I used nude cups, zipper, and “illusion” mesh material to create the under-skirt. …emphasis on Shadi’s nude, not the typical light nude used in ALL store-bought bridal gowns (*that I have seen in America, I know African gownmakers IN Africa have been doing this for years) One comment from sacralandirie said ” As designers, it’s not hard for us to be inclusive. Thank you for doing this.” and a comment from milwchica said “This is honestly one of the most stunning wedding dresses.I have ever seen in my life. 🔥”. There were a lot of “thank you for doing this” type of comments. And although I am appreciative, the thank yous feel TOO kind, this concept should not be a novelty, but the standard! See here!
I had made another video of Shadi essentially giving a speech about how much she loved the dress and her appreciation for my hard work, it was too funny and a core memory I will love for the rest of my life, I will put the caption to that one below! GOSH WE LOVE HER!
” A REAL LIFE review! @bonang.kgwadi you crack me up 😂🤣😂
HUGE shoutout to Ella at @detroit_content_creator ! I don’t think I could ever do a styled shoot without you now 😂 Thank you for capturing the magic!!!!
Ladies and gents…thank you SO much for all the love this day! This day will forever go down in history as stunningly ICONIC!!!! 🤯👏🏼 Go team go! Love makes the world go round!
So this moment happened because @pennyralenephotography left the room to go shoot some content for @ocillustration downstairs and Shadi felt the (unnecessary) responsibility to continue entertaining us all. That she did! She never let a single moment go dull! This is a little abnormal but ya’ll know NONE of us in the room were going to stop her! 😂 She went through and thanked all the incredible vendors and it was the sweetest moment ever! Poor Shadi was probably SO exhausted after this long day! I hope her man took her out to a nice dinner after!!!
P.S. Nobody asked @bonang.kgwadi to do this 😂 she is a performer at heart! 🫶🏼
P.P.S. Justin you are one lucky man!!!!”
***Overall, I am SO thankful that these videos did so well across so many social media platforms, I am thankful, grateful, and boosted with a sense of feeling like I am right where I belong in the world! Thank you ALL!!!!
Mary Frances Maker designed a gorgeous brooch for the shoot, made custom! We are very thankful she contributed to our design style and inspirations, she is incredible! Watch the Instagram video below to learn more!
Mary Frances Maker used bits of the vintage lace design to inspire the brooch design! It was so perfectly coordinated! See here
