Hi! I'm Sarah Kolis, a custom couture wedding dress designer based in Michigan but serving the whole midwest. I love creating custom gowns and alterations for clients and I have a special love for vintage fashion. Thanks for stopping by!
If you’re into fashion or love a good DIY story, then you’re in for a treat. Let me take you on a journey that started with a simple need for toile-inspired fabric and ended up creating a buzz in my world. Yes, I’m talking about the now-semi-viral Target Bedsheet Dress!
Every designer has that moment when they are on the hunt for the perfect fabric. For me, it was a blue floral fabric that I had envisioned for a styled shoot. The vibe was a sort of granny chic I searched high and low, through countless fabric stores and online shops, but nothing quite matched the image in my head. I was looking for a blue toile…you would think that wouldn’t be too difficult, but at that time, toile was just barely coming back into fashion and the fabric stores just didn’t carry it. Or, they carried it but it was a very deep navy blue and that was not the vibe. It was one of those moments where you start to feel like you might need to compromise on your vision. I was about to email the coordinator to switch direction when…
One day, when cleaning my house, I opened my linen closet up, and it hit me. The fabric I had been desperately searching for was right in front of me—literally. My beloved blue floral bedsheets from Target had the exact pattern and color I so desired. It was a perfect blend of serendipity and inspiration. I had a moment of hesitation, but the creative itch was too strong. I decided to turn those bedsheets into a fabulous gown, why not!
With a few trips to Target to stock up on more sheets (I couldn’t exactly tear up the ones on my guest bed), the project was underway. The process was exhilarating—cutting, sewing, and transforming everyday bedding into a piece of haute couture. The gown turned out to be even more spectacular than I had imagined. It had a flow and elegance that belied its humble origins. The blue floral pattern gave it a romantic and timeless appeal. Also, I told no one.
Until…one photographer at the styled shoot knew immediately as she owned the sheets herself! I felt a sense of embarrassment at first but she reassured me just how COOL that was and I soon embraced the concept!
The styled shoot was a success, and the Target Bedsheet Dress quickly became a talking point. People on social media were amazed at how something so ordinary could be turned into something extraordinary with a bit of creativity and vision. First time we had haters too! Apparently for a viral reel to occur, there needs to be some shenanigans occuring in the comments. Whelp…nothing good ever comes without a little backlash right?! The story of the dress spread, and it wasn’t long before I started receiving inquiries from people who wanted their own bedsheet dress. We’ve now received 5 international inquires!
Some of these comments included the NICEST words such as “Give me a bedsheet dress or I don’t want it”, “This one is pure Gold”, “It’s not where you get it, it’s how you wear it!!”, and lots of fun humor sprinkled in.
One such inquiry came from an overseas bride who had fallen in love with the dress and wanted one just like it for her wedding. The idea that something I created from a Target bedsheet would walk down the aisle on someone’s special day was incredibly rewarding. I’m currently in the process of making this special gown, and it feels like coming full circle, from a personal project to an international fashion statement. To make things even sweeter, this fabulous bride is getting married in Africa! I cannot wait to share HER wedding day photos with you!!!

The story of the Target Bedsheet Dress is a testament to creativity and the power of seeing potential in the mundane. It’s about breaking conventions and finding beauty in unexpected places. So, next time you find yourself struggling to find the perfect material for your project, remember this story. Sometimes, the perfect fabric might just be under your nose—or, in this case, on your bed!
